Herbert J. Spiro papers, 1946-2002.

Correspondence, coursework, notes, papers, classified files, audio and videotapes, photographs, literary manuscripts, and printed materials spanning 1946-1994 document Herbert J. Spiro's education and teaching career, military service, government service, and involvement in politics and political campaigns. The bulk of the collection consists of academia office files, correspondence, course notes and lecture notes from Spiro's teaching career at Harvard, Amherst, University of Pennsylvania, and University of Texas. Also included are a number of essays and manuscripts by Spiro including Theory of Responsibility in Government and The Revolt Against Determinism. Of note are 1975 reel to reel taped interviews with Spiro when he was U.S. Ambassador to Cameroon. Campaign materials including flyers, newsclippings and correspondence offer insight into Spiro's run for a seat in the Texas House of Representatives, and the U.S. House and Senate in the 1990s.

Herbert John Spiro was born in 1924 in Hamburg, Germany, and immigrated in 1938 to the United States where he would become a noted educator in political science, a U.S. ambassador, and a candidate for public office. While serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, he earned a purple heart and two bronze star medals. After the war, Spiro attended Harvard where he received his Ph.D. in 1953.
